Debut Video Capture Software is a video capture and screencasting application. Although it is just an application that can record video from several different sources, there are many other uses for it, screencasting being the most notable of them. Debut allows you to record your screen as if you were recording a webcam feed. When you start recording, the application goes to the system tray to avoid obstructing your work. Also, you can select a specific area of your desktop that you want to capture. At the top of the screen, there is a series of icons that allow you to switch to different types of capture devices. You can capture video from the screen, from a webcam, from a video capture device (USB, firewire, etc), and you can also set a schedule to record something.
Webcam recording is really good. The webcam settings and the output quality and encoder can be customized. When I first opened the application, my cam was displayed in a very low resolution, which would make for smoother but of lesser quality videos, so I changed it back to 640x480 (a standard these days). I also changed the output format from .WMV to a high-quality .AVI, to see what it looked like. I used MPEG compressor as a codec and the video looked great. I was amazed that Debut also recorded audio in all its modes. Watermarks and text captions can also be added to any of your recordings, which can be seen listed in the tab "Recordings", along with their creation dates, duration and size.
